Weatherfax and text forecast products are broadcast to mariners by administrations around the world.  You can download a schedule of these broadcasts under Resources, to the left.

Decoding these broadcasts used to require a dedicated receiver - but not any more.  Now you can use software on your onboard computer, connected to your Marine SSB (or a shortwave receiver) to capture these broadcasts in real time.

Most of the software available today will use your computer's sound card (or an external Pactor modem, if you have one) to translate these digital broadcasts.  All that's required is a simple connection between your SSB's audio out to your computer's microphone or line-in.

Mscan Meteo

Mscan uses your SSB or shortwave receiver along with your computer to decode FAX, NAVTEX and RTTY signals, make VOICE recordings and view GRIB files in a single program.

Never before has it been so easy to receive every piece of vital information you need for safe passage: all you need is Mscan Meteo, an SSB receiver, a simple audio cable and a laptop. Mscan Meteo is "highly recommended for the serious yachtsman!".

System requirements:

        Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000 or XP
        Pentium 166 compatible or better
        24 Mb RAM or more
Sound Card or external modem (PTC-II/IIe/IIpro).

If you own a remote-controllable receiver, Mscan can be configured to automate the reception process.  It will turn on your radio at the appropriate time, tune to the correct frequency and receive the broadcast without human intervention.

Most Barrett, ICOM, JRC, Lowe, and Yaesu model SSB transceivers are capable of remote control.  Additional cabling for radio control may be required.

You can download a trial version of Mscan (left) for evaluation.  When you decide to purchase, just contact us for a registration code that will unlock all program features.
