Think of Pactor as a unique language for transmitting digital information via radio. The interface box that connects to your SSB and speaks this language over the airwaves is a radio modem (sometimes called a terminal node controller). Modems manufactured by SCS -- the group who invented Pactor -- are called PTC's, short for Pactor Terminal Controller, but most of us just call them "Pactor modems".
Pactor-III, the latest and fastest version of this protocol to date, came along late in 2001. Pactor-III is a proprietary protocol, available only in the PTC boxes manufactured by SCS. In addition to being three to five times faster than Pactor-II, Pactor-III does an even better job of keeping a radio connection going, even under tough signal conditions. Consequently, Pactor-III is now the preferred standard for Email Service Providers like SailMail, WinLink and XNet - all of our modems come with the Pactor-III license included.
